Field Marshal Sir Archibald Percival Wavell,  1st Earl Wavell  GCB, GCSI, GCIE, MC, PC, May 1883 – 24 May 1950) was a British Field Marshal and the commander of  British Army forces in the Middle East during the Second World War. He led British forces to victory over the Italians only to be defeated by the German army. He was the penultimate Viceroy of India from 1943 to 1947.

A great lover of literature, while Viceroy, compiled and annotated an anthology of great poetry, Other Men's Flowers. The last poem in the anthology he wrote himself and described it as a "...little wayside dandelion of my own". He had a great memory for poetry and often quoted it at length.

Includes work by William Blake, John Milton, Robert Browing, William Shakespeare, Rudyard Kipling, and many others.

Field-Marshal Lord Wavell (1883-1950), educated at Winchester College and Sandhurst, was wounded at Ypres in the First World War and lost the sight of one eye. A professional soldier, he became known as an officer untrammeled by convention and as an exceptional trainer of troops. In 1939 he was given the Middle East Command and soon found himself fighting eight separate campaigns. His defeat of a numerically superior Italian army, with the capture of 130,000 prisoners, was as remarkable as his adroit conquest of Abyssinia. He was Viceroy of India from 1943 to 1947, and in the last years of his life in London he became president of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Kipling, Browning, Poetry and Virgil Societies.
